01 / Meet the man behind the tools

Proven experience.
A steady hand.

The judgement of an operations leader. The care of someone who puts his own name to the work.

At Caxton, he managed the Newcastle Advertiser press hall for 15 years, leading a team of 25 and overseeing complex machinery, preventive maintenance, safety, cost control and daily production deadlines.

Since establishing HandyJan in 2019, he has applied that same discipline to commercial buildings and private homes. The work is personal: you deal directly with Jan, from understanding the problem to agreeing the work and seeing it through.

Jan’s technical background includes formal printing technology qualifications, with a distinction at Honeydew Printing College, and City & Guilds qualifications.

02 / What needs attention?

A lot of know-how.
One person to call.

From the workings of a building to the details you live with every day. A broad range of practical skills, supported by a clear understanding of the problem and the work required.

01Plumbing & drainage

A leak or blockage can disrupt the whole property. I trace the source, explain the repair and get the water flowing where it should.

  • Hidden leaks and damaged pipework
  • Blocked drains and sewer lines
  • Taps, toilets, basins and baths
  • Geyser repairs and replacements
  • Emergency water isolation
  • Complex drainage problems
Ask about a plumbing job
02Roofing, waterproofing & gutters

A damp patch does not always tell you where the water is getting in. I investigate the roof, gutters and seals to find the source before making good the damage.

  • Roof leaks, sealing and waterproofing
  • Roof-sheet repairs and replacement
  • Gutters and downpipes
  • Hidden and internal gutter leaks
  • Damp-source investigation
  • General sealing work
Tell me about the leak
03Carpentry, doors & windows

Doors that close properly. Fittings that hold. Practical carpentry and joinery repairs that make your space work better, every day.

  • Door hanging, adjustment and repair
  • Cupboards, shelves and joinery
  • Window repairs and replacement
  • Skirting and architraves
  • Furniture and fixture repairs
  • General woodwork
Discuss a carpentry job
04Painting & surface restoration

A good finish starts with sound preparation. I repair and prepare surfaces, deal with the aftermath of water damage and help get rooms ready to use again.

  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Wall and surface preparation
  • Water-damage restoration
  • Stain covering and making good
  • Rental and commercial refreshes
  • Suitable spray-painting work
Discuss a refresh
05Tiling & general building repairs

Take care of the loose tile, damaged plaster or growing maintenance list. Small building repairs can be grouped into one clear scope of work.

  • Minor tiling repairs and replacement
  • Plaster, cracks and surface repairs
  • Ceiling and floor repairs
  • General property maintenance
  • Make-good work
  • Pre-occupation repair lists
Share your repair list
06Basic electrical troubleshooting

Practical fault finding and basic-to-intermediate repairs, with the scope confirmed before work starts. Safety and knowing when a specialist is needed come first.

  • Basic fault finding
  • Light fittings
  • Plugs and switches
  • Practical troubleshooting

Complex electrical work and work requiring a certificate of compliance need an appropriately registered electrician. Jan will clarify whether a job is within his scope.

07Equipment & specialist repairs

Years around industrial machinery bring a useful perspective to less straightforward jobs. Describe the equipment and the fault so I can assess what is possible.

  • Pump rebuilds and equipment repairs
  • Welding and burglar-proofing
  • Gates, locks and security hardware
  • Air-conditioning filter cleaning
  • Practical generator repairs
  • Assessor and inspector site visits

For fire-equipment servicing or other specialist work, the scope and any specialist servicing requirements are confirmed before proceeding.

03 / Experience in practice

Seen a few things.
Solved a few, too.

Some problems call for a closer look, a practical decision and the resolve to see the work through. These are examples from Jan’s previous work.

ROOT-CAUSE REPAIRS

Finding the leak others missed.

Experience tracing persistent roof leaks to hidden internal gutters and dealing with the damage at its source.

COMMERCIAL PROBLEM SOLVING

Getting below the surface.

Complex sewer blockages beneath multi-storey buildings, damaged drainage and collapsed manholes.

URGENT PROPERTY CARE

Acting when it matters.

Emergency leak isolation and repairs in retail stock areas, where preventing further damage is the immediate priority.

Experience serving approximately 48 commercial clients and 20 private homes. References available on request.

04 / How Jan works

Straight talking.
Proper follow-through.

Good work starts with a shared understanding. You know who you are dealing with, what is being done and what has been agreed.

Understand.

Share the issue, your location and any photographs. Jan will ask about the property, the history of the problem and your priorities.

Assess.

The cause is investigated and a site assessment arranged where needed. The aim is a suitable repair, based on a proper understanding.

Agree.

Scope, costs, materials and timing are discussed before work starts. Any specialist requirements are identified at this stage.

Carry through.

The work is carried out with care for the property and the people using it. Jan explains what has been done and takes responsibility for the result.

Before making an enquiry

Good questions.
Straight answers.

Can you help after hours or over a weekend?

After-hours, weekend and standby work can be arranged, subject to availability. Contact Jan to discuss your requirements and confirm a suitable time.

What if it’s urgent?

Call 083 717 0646 to check immediate availability. Explain the problem and your location. An urgent call-out is only confirmed once you have spoken with Jan and agreed the next step.

Can I send a list of different jobs?

Absolutely. HandyJan covers several trades, so a maintenance list is a good starting point. Include photos and highlight the priorities. Jan will confirm which jobs he can take on and anything needing a specialist.

Do you work with commercial properties?

Yes. HandyJan has served around 48 commercial clients, with experience in retail, guesthouses, aged-care facilities and multi-storey buildings. Property managers and facilities teams can enquire about one-off work, overflow repairs and after-hours maintenance.

How do quotes and call-out costs work?

Costs depend on the problem, the location, materials and the work involved. Send the details first. Jan will explain whether a site visit is needed and discuss any assessment or call-out costs before you agree to proceed.

Can I ask for references?

Yes. References are available on request. The business has grown mainly through word of mouth and recommendations from clients.
